Naught have I gotten but what I received

November 30

Naught have I gotten but what I received;
Grace hath bestowed it since I have believed;
Boasting excluded, pride I abase;
I’m only a sinner saved by grace!

Once I was foolish, and sin ruled my heart,
Causing my footsteps from God to depart;
Jesus hath found me, happy my case;
I now am a sinner saved by grace!

Tears unavailing, no merit had I;
Mercy had saved me, or else I must die;
Sin had alarmed me, fearing God’s face;
But now I’m a sinner saved by grace!

Suffer a sinner whose heart overflows,
Loving his Savior, to tell what he knows;
Once more to tell it would I embrace—
I’m only a sinner saved by grace!

Chorus
Only a sinner saved by grace!
Only a sinner saved by grace!
This is my story, to God be the glory,—
I’m only a sinner saved by grace!

Some fair tomorrow we shall know

November 29

Some fair tomorrow we shall know
Life’s mysteries that hurt us so,
And how the burdens furnished wings
To lift us over earthly things.

Some fair tomorrow we shall know
The secret joy beneath our woe;
The love and wisdom in disguise
Will then be open to our eyes.

Some fair tomorrow we shall know
Why seeming good we must forego,
While plans are hindered which we tho’t
Were all for Jesus’ glory wrought.

Some fair tomorrow we shall know,
We trust in Him who tells us so;
Serene and patient, we abide
To see our sorrow glorified.

Chorus

Some fair tomorrow we shall know!
Then let us wait His time below,
While hope may borrow from that bright morrow
A light to cheer us as we go,
While hope may borrow from that bright morrow
A light to cheer us as we go.

Great things the Lord has done for me

November 28

Great things the Lord has done for me,
For His redeeming love
Is deeper than the deepest sea,
And wide as heav’n above.

He left His throne, His life He gave,
He suffered all my pains;
For me, arising from the grave,
He lives and ever reigns.

My heavy load He bore away,
He heard my humble pray’r;
He turned my darkness into day,
And saved me from despair.

He sent the Holy One to be
My Comforter and Guest,
To show the things of Christ to me,
And lead me into rest.

Chorus

Yes, deeper, wider than the sea
The fountain of His love must be,
A fountain flowing full and free,
It flows for you as well as me.

My soul is so happy in Jesus

November 27

My soul is so happy in Jesus,
For He is so precious to me;
His voice it is music to hear it,
His face it is heaven to see.

He sought me so long ere I knew Him,
When wand’ring afar from the fold;
Safe home in His arms He hath bro’t me,
To where there are pleasures untold.

His love and His mercy surround me,
His grace like a river doth flow;
His Spirit, to guide and to comfort,
Is with me wherever I go.

They say I shall some day be like Him,
My cross and my burden lay down;
Till then I will ever be faithful,
In gathering gems for His crown.

Chorus
I am happy in Him, I am happy in Him;
My soul with delight
He fills day and night,
For I am happy in Him.

Who will open mercy’s door

November 26

Who will open mercy’s door?
Jesus will!  Jesus will!
As for pardon I implore?
Jesus, blessed Jesus will!

Who can take away my sin?
Jesus will!  Jesus will!
Make me pure, without, within?
Jesus, blessed Jesus will!

Who can conquer doubts and fears?
Jesus will!  Jesus will!
Share my joys and dry my tears?
Jesus, blessed Jesus will!

Who will be my dearest Friend?
Jesus will!  Jesus will!
Love and keep me to the end?
Jesus, blessed Jesus will!

Chorus
Jesus will, Jesus will!
Yes, your loving Savior will;
He will each and ev’ry need fulfill,
Jesus, blessed Jesus will!

Jesus is coming to earth again

November 25

Jesus is coming to earth again,
What if it were today?
Coming in power and love to reign,
What if it were today?
Coming to claim His chosen Bride,
All the redeemed and purified,
Over this whole earth scattered wide,
What if it were today?

Satan’s dominion will then be o’er,
O that it were today!
Sorrow and sighing shall be no more,
O that it were today!
Then shall the dead in Christ arise,
Caught up to meet Him in the skies,
When shall these glories meet our eyes?
What if it were today?

Faithful and true would He find us here
If He should come today?
Watching in gladness and not in fear,
If He should come today?
Signs of His coming multiply,
Morning light breaks in eastern sky,
Watch, for the time is drawing nigh,
What if it were today?

Chorus
Glory! glory!
Joy to my heart ‘twill bring;
Glory, glory!
When we shall crown Him King;
Glory, glory!
Haste to prepare the way;
Glory, glory!
Jesus will come some day.

O land of rest, for thee I sigh

November 24

O land of rest, for thee I sigh!
When will the moment come
When I shall lay my armor by,
And dwell in peace at home?

To Jesus Christ I fled for rest;
He bade me cease to roam,
And lean for succor on His breast
Till He conduct me home.

I sought at once my Savior’s side,
No more my steps shall roam;
With Him I’ll brave death’s chilling tide,
And reach my heavn’ly home.

Chorus
We’ll work till Jesus comes,
We’ll work ill Jesus comes;
We’ll work till Jesus comes,
And we’ll be gathered home.

On to the work He has given

November 23

On to the work He has given,
On with a true, willing heart;
Ready to help where you’re needed,
Earnestly doing your part.
All of one mind and united,
Putting forth efforts that tell;
Go with a zeal all consuming-
Do what you may, and that well.

Zeal for the Master increasing,
As you pursue the right way;
Zeal in His good ways of service,
List’ning for what He may say;
Yielding your ev’ry emotion
To His compassionate will;
Thus to His wisdom conforming,
That your right place you may fill.

Zeal for His cause is rewarded
By the results we attain
In the increase of His kingdom,
Thro’out His earthly domain;
Souls for our hire He will lend us,
If we with zeal work and pray;
And after all He will give us
Glory in Heaven some day.

Chorus
“Zeal” for the cause of our Master,
“Zeal” shall our watchword be;
“Zeal” for the work He’s assigned us,
“Zeal” worthy others should see-
This is what Jesus would have us
Show in His work here below;
Then with a zeal never dying,
On in His service we go.

Jesus, keep me near the cross

November 22

Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain
Free to all-a healing stream
Flows from Calvary’s mountain.

Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and mercy found me;
There the bright and Morning Star
Sheds its beams around me.

Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day,
With its shadows o’er me.

Near the cross I’ll watch and wait,
Hoping, trusting, ever,
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.

Chorus
In the cross, in the cross,
Be my glory ever;
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.

I’ve a Savior, kind and tender

November 21

I’ve a Savior, kind and tender,
I’ve a Savior full of grace,
And a smile of winning sweetness
Ever beams upon His face.
In my heart’s shrine of affection
He shall hold the highest place.

For my sake He came from Heaven
To this world of sin and shame;
Bore my guilt, tho’ He was guiltless,
And tho’ blameless, took my blame.
Can I ever cease to love Him,
And His goodness to proclaim?

Tho’ I’ve often been unworthy,
He has constant been, and true;
Tho’ I wronged Him, He forgave me
When I would my vows renew;
Tho’ I spurned Him, He with kindness
My rebellious heart did woo.

I’ve a Savior, kind and tender,
He would be your Savior, too;
Will you not accept the pardon
Which He freely offers you?
Take Him now as your Redeemer,
Earth has not a friend so true.

Chorus
How I love Him!
How I love Him!
Since for me He bled and died;
How I love Him!
Yes, I love Him
More than all the world beside.

We shall have a new name in that Land

November 20

We shall have a new name in that Land,
And forever rest at God’s right hand;
With the hosts of His redeemed we’ll stand,
In that Land of Light.

We shall sing of Christ who faithfully
Bore the cruel cross on Calvary,
Paid the price of sin so willingly,-
In that Land of Light.

We shall o’er and o’er His name repeat,
Tell of His redemption so complete,
Cast our starry crowns at His pierc’d feet,
In that Land of Light.

Chorus
In that Land of Light,
Glorious and bright,
We shall have a new name in that Land,
In that Land of Light.

When by friends I’m forsaken

November 19

When by friends I’m forsaken
There’s some One who cares;
When by sin overtaken
There’s some One who cares;
When the world turns away,
And I scarcely can pray,
I know there is some One who cares.

When my hopes turn to ashes
There’s some One who cares;
When the wild tempest lashes
There’s some One who cares;
When my heart cries within,
All because of my sin,
I know there is some One who cares.

When my heart is repenting
There’s some One who cares;
When my will is relenting
There’s some One who cares;
When I fall at His feet,
And my story repeat,
‘Tis Jesus my Savior who cares.

Chorus
There’s some One who cares,
There’s some One who cares,
My joys and my sorrows He shares;
He is touched by my woes,
And my weakness He knows,
And for me He tenderly cares.

November 18

I’m the child of the King of kings,
Who reigns in the realm above;
Joy and peace to my heart it brings,
Just trusting in His great love.

I’m the child of the King of kings;
How true is His friendship sweet!
Day by day my heart ever sings,
So happy in Him complete.

I’m the child of the King of kings,
And true to Him I will be;
I’m awaiting the time which brings
The mansion prepared for me.

Chorus
I’m the child of the King of kings,
The child of the King of kings;
I’ll sing of His love so true and so great,
I’m the child of the King of kings.

I have a Friend who walks with me

November 17

I have a Friend who walks with me
By waters still or stormy sea;
Serene I go-why need I fear?-
Just when I need Him He is near.

I have a Friend who will not fail,
Tho’ sin may tempt and doubts assail;
What matter, then, what foes appear?
When I need Him He is near.

With such a Friend to help me on,
I’m never, never left alone,
For all the way He gives me cheer;
Just when I need Him He is near.

Chorus
Moment by moment He dearer grows;
Each step of the way His love He shows;
He puts within my heart a song of cheer;
Just when I need Him He is near.

Lift me higher, loving Jesus

November 16

Lift me higher, loving Jesus,
Far above this earthly strife;
Let Thy peace possess my spirit,
Grant Thy gift of endless life.
Guilty, lost, and undeserving, Lord,
I claim Thy pardon free;
Now, in Thine atoning mercy,
Lift me nearer, nearer Thee.

Lift me higher, lest my garments,
Trailing garments of the flesh,
In the sordid, earthly pathway,
Bring reproach on Thee afresh.
Lift me, Lord, above temptation,
Let me triumph by Thy grace;
Draw me nearer, that, unhindered,
I may gaze upon Thy face.

Lift me higher, lead me homeward,
Let my burden gently fall;
Let me face Thee, let me listen
For Thy softly whispered call.
Looking upward, till the dawning
Of the light celestial gleams,
Let me lean upon Thy bosom,
Where the radiant glory beams.

Chorus
Lift me higher, tender Savior,
To the refuge of Thy breast;
Far above my sin and sorrow,
Let me on Thy bosom rest.

Just when I am disheartened

November 15

Just when I am disheartened,
Just when with cares oppressed,
Just when my way is darkest,
Just when I am distressed-
Then is my Savior near me,
He knows my ev’ry care;
Jesus will never leave me,
He helps my burdens bear.

Just when my hopes have vanished,
Just when my friends forsake,
Just when the fight is thickest,
Just when with fear I shake-
Then comes a still, small whisper,
“Fear not, My child, I’m near.”
Jesus brings peace and comfort,
I love His voice to hear.

Just when my tears are flowing,
Just when with anguish bent,
Just when temptation’s hardest,
Just when with sadness rent-
Then comes a tho’t of comfort,
“I know my Father knows;”
Jesus has grace sufficient
To conquer all my foes.

Chorus
His grace is enough for me, for me,
His grace is enough for me;
Thro’ sorrow and pain,
Thro’ loss or gain,
His grace is enough for me.
     J. Bruce Evans

Tho’ burdens heavy we here must bear

November 14

Tho’ burdens heavy we here must bear,
And the eyes are made dim with tears,
There’ll be naught of sorrow “over there”
In the “home of the endless years.”

With toilsome effort in faith we sow,
Tho’ no harvest our vision cheers;
We will not lose heart, ‘twill all be plain,
In the “home of the endless years.”

We’ll labor with a smile and a song,
And we’ll give to the winds our fears,
For the day of trials can’t be long,
Soon the “home of the endless years.”

Chorus
In the better land,
In that sunny land,
In that Eden land, safe by and by;
In that better land,
In that sunny land,
In that Eden land, safe by and by.

If you need uplifting, if you need a song

November 13

If you need uplifting, if you need a song,
Strength to help your soul to triumph over wrong,
Put your faith in Jesus, He is true and strong;
Faith will bring the blessing ev’ry time.

In some hour unguarded, if the foe assail,
Tho’ you feel your weakness, let not courage fail;
Trust in Jesus only and you shall prevail;
Faith will bring the blessing ev’ry time.

On the Lord depending, sing along the way,
Naught can ever harm you if He is your stay;
Lean upon His promise till the better day;
Faith will bring the blessing ev’ry time.

Chorus
Faith will bring the blessing ev’ry time,
Tho’ your faith be simple or sublime;
For the Savior knows the heart,
Ev’ry need He will impart;
Faith will bring the blessing ev’ry time.

Sometimes, to my heart comes a vision of joy

November 12

Sometimes, to my heart comes a vision of joy,
When Jesus my Savior draws near;
He gives me the peace that no ill can destroy;
His voice I seem almost to hear.

How blest are the moments when faith can behold
The footsteps of Christ in the way!
But O, we look forward to rapture untold,
Where shineth the shadowless day!

How sweet the communion we have with Him here;
Unseen, yet so precious is He;
Some day, face to face, where there cometh no tear,
Our King in His beauty we’ll see.

Chorus
I know I shall see Him on high,
I know I shall see Him on high;
When faith yields to sight in the land of delight,
I know I shall see Him on high.

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore

November 11

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more;
But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.

All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I’ll cling,
In His blessed presence live, ever His praises sing,
Love so mighty and so true merits my soul’s best songs;
Faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.

Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves;
He will lift you by His love out of the angry waves.
He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey;
He your Savior wants to be-be saved today.

Chorus
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me!
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me!
     James Rowe

Great multitudes of men are widely straying

November 10

Great multitudes of men are widely straying,
Out upon life’s desert sands far, far away;
O child of God, are you for such ones praying?
In God’s name go after them, win one today!

Deep pits of sin before their feet are lying;
Snares and perils ev’rywhere they’re sure to meet;
In darkness wand’ring on to certain dying,
Unless you, O child of God, win one today!

For them the Savior gave His life a ransom,
And for you has taken all your sins away;
Your love for Him and for their sad condition,
Call you forth into the fray; win one today!

Chorus
Win one today, for the glory of your Master!
Your gentle touch and word will show some one the way;
Win one today, for the glory of your Master!
There are many far astray, win one today.

Saved to the uttermost: I am the Lord’s

November 9

Saved to the uttermost: I am the Lord’s;
Jesus my Savior salvation affords;
Gives me His Spirit, a witness within,
Whispering of pardon, and saving from sin.

Saved to the uttermost: Jesus is near;
Keeping me safely, He casteth out fear;
Trusting His promises, how I am blest;
Leaning upon Him, how sweet is my rest.

Saved to the uttermost: this I can say,
“Once all was darkness, but now it is day;
Beautiful visions of glory I see,
Jesus in brightness revealed unto me.”

Saved to the uttermost; cheerfully sing
Loud hallelujahs to Jesus my King!
Ransomed and pardoned, redeemed by His blood,
Cleansed from unrighteousness, glory to God.

Refrain
Saved, saved, saved to the uttermost:
Saved, saved by power divine;
Saved, saved, saved to the uttermost:
Jesus the Savior is mine!

Do you know the world is dying

November 8

Do you know the world is dying
For a little bit of love?
Everywhere we hear the sighing
For a little bit of love;
For the love that rights a wrong,
Fills the heart with hope and song;
They have waited, oh, so long,
For a little bit of love!
For a little bit of love,
For a little bit of love,
They have waited, oh, so long,
For a little bit of love!

From the poor of every city,
For a little bit of love,
Hands are reaching out in pity
For a little bit of love;
Some have burdens hard to bear,
Some have sorrows we would share;
Shall they falter and despair
For a little bit of love?
For a little bit of love,
For a little bit of love,
Shall they falter and despair
For a little bit of love?

Down before their idols falling,
For a little bit of love,
Many souls in vain are calling
For a little bit of love;
If they die in sin and shame,
Someone surely is to blame
For not going in His Name,
With a little bit of love.
With a little bit of love,
With a little bit of love,
For not going, in His Name,
With a little bit of love.

While the souls of men are dying
For a little bit of love,
While the children too are crying
For a little bit of love,
Stand no longer idly by,
You can help them if you try;
Go, then saying, “Here am I,”
With a little bit of love!
With a little bit of love,
With a little bit of love,
Go, then, saying: “Here am I,”
With a little bit of love!

I must tell Jesus all of my trials

November 7

I must tell Jesus all of my trials;
I cannot bear these burdens alone;
In my distress He kindly will help me;
He ever loves and cares for His own.

I must tell Jesus all of my troubles;
He is a kind, compassionate Friend;
If I but ask Him, He will deliver,
Make of my troubles quickly an end.

Tempted and tried, I need a great Savior;
One who can help my burdens to bear;
I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus;
He all my cares and sorrows will share.

O how the world to evil allures me!
O how my heart is tempted to sin!
I must tell Jesus, and He will help me
Over the world the victory to win.

Chorus
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
I cannot bear my burdens alone;
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.

I love to be alone with God

November 6

I love to be alone with God,
And to listen to His loving voice;
As He bids my ev’ry care depart,
How His presence makes my heart rejoice!

I tell Him of my doubts and fears,
And He stills the tempest in my breast,
Bids the raging storms of passion cease,
Calms my anxious tho’t with quiet rest.

I tell Him of my weaknesses,
Of my sins, my hopes, and fond desires;
And He cheers my heart to onward press
To gain the goal my soul aspires.

Then let me never seek to know
Sweeter friendship than with Him I find,
As I choose the quiet hours with Him,
Leaving all the busy world behind.

Chorus
Alone with God,
No other friend so dear,
Alone with God,
What joy when He is near!
My heart with rapture thrills,
My cup of blessing fills,
When all alone with God.
     George H. Carr

Once I loved to choose my way

November 5

Once I loved to choose my way,
Now for grace and strength I pray,
Ever in my heart to say
“The will of the Lord be done!”

I am blind but He can see,
He will choose my path for me,
Guide me safely, constantly,-
“The will of the Lord be done!”

If my treasures He must take,
I will yield them for His sake,
Even if my heart should break,-
“The will of the Lord be done!”

He would not afflict in vain,
Cause His child a needless pain;
What seems loss must prove my gain,-
“The will of the Lord be done!”

O what perfect peace is mine!
O what rest and joy divine!
As I all to Him resign,-
“The will of the Lord be done!”

Chorus
His will is best,
In that I rest,
In shadow or in sun;
So, come what may,
Yet will I say
“The will of the Lord be done!”

His gifts are greater than my dreams

November 4

His gifts are greater than my dreams,
The gifts of God to me;
As countless as the sunset’s golden beams,
As boundless as the sea.

I ask a part, He gives the whole-
Himself, and all beside;
His loving-kindness overflows my soul,
In rushing as the tide.

“His ways are ways of pleasantness,
His paths are paths of peace;”
His hand is ever reaching out to bless;
He bids each sorrow cease.

Within my heart He shall have place
To rule and reign supreme;
My voice will ever praise Him for the grace
Of which I ne’er could dream.

Chorus
His gifts are greater than my dreams,
The gifts of Him who set me free;
And more and more abundant daily seems
The grace of God to me.

I know not the way that my Saviour may lead

November 3

I know not the way that my Saviour may lead,
How strongly the world may allure;
I know not the morrow of gladness or need,
But I know that His promise is sure.

I know not what comrades my Saviour may send,
What fellowships faithful and pure;
But He will be faithful as Comrade and Friend,
For I know that His promise is sure.

I know not how soon He may whisper my name,
How long He may bid me endure;
But longer or shorter, the way is the same,
Since I know that His promise is sure.

Chorus

I know that His promise is sure, is sure,
I know that His promise is sure;
I know my dear Lord, and I trust His word,
For I know that His promise is sure.

My Father, this I ask of Thee

November 2

My Father, this I ask of Thee;
Knowing that Thou wilt grant the plea,-
For this, and only this, I pray,
Strength for today—just for today.

I do not ask a lifted load,
Nor for a smooth and thornless road;
Simply for strength enough to bear
Life’s daily burdens anywhere.

Strength for the present hour and need—
This given, then I’m blest indeed;
For each day, as it comes, will bring
Sufficient strength for anything.

Strength for today, that I may make
Some sad souls glad, for Jesus’ sake;
Then they, with me, at eve shall say,
“Thank God for strength He gave today.”

Chorus
Strength for each trial and each task,
What more, my Father, should I ask?
Just as I need it, day by day,
Strength for my weakness—this I pray.

I’m pressing on the upward way

November 1

I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I’m onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.

I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.

I want to scale the utmost height,
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till Heav’n I’ve found,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Chorus
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith, on Heaven’s table-land,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
     Rev. Johnson Oatman, Jr.
